ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION

Venice was flooded on Sunday (October 28) as a cold front hits parts of Europe.

The famous Venetian landmark of St. Mark's Square was under water on Sunday after the lagoon city flooded after heavy rains.

Some restaurants and shops kept their doors shut but others were determined to serve tourists, who snapped photos as they waded through knee-deep water.

Many had covered their legs and feet with plastic bags or sported thigh-high rubber boots.

Some tourists could be seen carrying their suitcases on their heads or stopping for a sandwich with the water up to their knees.

The water rose to a height of 123cm (50 inches) above sea level on Sunday morning, putting 30 percent of the historic centre under water.

Raised walkways have been set up across the area to help people move around the flooded canal city.

Italy, France and surrounding countries have been hit by bad weather over the weekend, with heavy rain, strong winds and plummeting temperatures as the European winter begins.
