Strong winds lash China's southern island province of Hainan.

The wind and rain here in Sanya are the result of Typhoon Son-Tinh, which passed just off shore as it churned toward Vietnam.

On Saturday Chinese meteorological authorities ranked the storm as a level two typhoon, while state broadcaster CCTV uprated it to a super typhoon, with wind speeds up to 89 miles per hour.

Thousands of travelers were stranded at Sanya's Phoenix International Airport, as the gale force winds disrupted 140 flights.

Authorities also reported that over 82,000 residents had been relocated to temporary shelters following the storm.
