Nearly 3000 demonstrators, led by Buddhist monks, took to the streets of Yangon on Monday (October 15) to oppose a plan to set up an office of the Organisation of Islamic Committee (OIC), saying it will only benefit Muslims in the Rakhine State crisis.
OIC, the largest Muslim body, signed an agreement last month with the Myanmar government to open an office in the country, which is set to deliver humanitarian aid to Muslim Rohingya in the western Rakhine State.
Up to 800,000 Rohingyas live along Myanmar's border with Bangladesh in abject conditions. Neither country recognises them as citizens.
