A massive cereal recall as Kellogg suspects metal contamination.
Kellogg recently announced a major recall for Frosted Mini-Wheats Bite-Size Original and Mini-Wheats Unfrosted Bite Size cereals.
Metal mesh pieces from ‘a faulty manufacturing part’ are the cause of the recall, but thankfully no one has reported being injured.
Approximately 2.8 million cereal boxes are part of the recall and stores are working to get them off the shelves.
Packages with ‘Better if Used Before Dates’ between April 1, 2013 –through September 21, 2013 with the letters KB, AP or FK before the date have all been affected.
Kellogg expects the recall to cost the company anywhere from $20-$30 million.
It may be surprising to some what is allowed into the foods we eat. The FDA has legal regulations on what can and cannot be in the food that is sold commercially. They say some contamination is unavoidable and allow for a certain amount of "objectionable matter contributed by insects, rodents, and birds; decomposed material; and miscellaneous matter such as sand, soil, glass, rust, or other foreign substances."
