Hi, hopefully you saw my last video about how 1 in 3 California drivers is either uninsured or underinsured and how the California minimum auto insurance limit is only a paltry $15,000.00. If you think this is as scary as I do, here is what you can do TODAY to protect yourself from uninsured and underinsured drivers. I recommend to all of my clients who have auto insurance, regardless of income, that they carry a minimum of $100,000 of uninsured motorist coverage. Further, if they can afford it, and most people can because it is really only a few extra dollars a month, I recommend a minimum of $250,000.00 of uninsured motorist coverage. Uninsured motorist coverage (also referred to as underinsured motorist coverage) is meant to protect you in the event you are injured by an uninsured or underinsured driver. In California, your uninsured motorist coverage will cover you for the difference between your coverage and that of the person who injured you. For instance, if you are injured by a driver carrying the minimum limits of $15,000 and you carry a $100,000 uninsured motorist policy, you can recover up to $85,000 (the difference between your coverage and theirs) from your uninsured motorist coverage after recovering $15,000 from the other driver. Surprisingly, this extra coverage only runs you a few extra dollars a month. The bulk of most people pay for auto insurance is related to coverage for their vehicle, not their body. We spend more money protecting our cars than our health. This seems a little crazy if you ask me. Add better uninsured motorist coverage to your policy today. It is more than worth it considering the large percentage of uninsured and underinsured drivers in California.
