Italian comedian turned politician Beppe Grillo has launched his regional election campaign with a swim across the Straits of Messina.
The 64-year-old swam the three kilometres to protest against plans to build a bridge linking Sicily to mainland Italy.
Sicilians go to the polls to elect a regional governor on October 28.
