Upsot: "This year's prize deals with cells and sensibility"

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announces that two American scientists are awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize for chemistry.

Robert Lefkowitz and Brian Kobilka won the 1.2 million US dollar prize for discovering the inner working of G-protein coupled receptors.

Their research is helping to develop better drugs with less side effects to fight illnesses such as diabetes, cancer and depression.

The two scientists were not present at the news conference, but expressed their surprise at hearing the news.

Chemistry was the first of this year's Nobel Prizes - a series of awards that first began in 1901 in accordance with the will of dynamite inventor Alfred Nobel.
