PART AUDIO QUALITY AS INCOMING
Members of the American Burmese community gather in Los Angeles, ready for an audience with pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
The event was Suu Kyi's final stop on her two-week tour of the U.S..
After a warm welcome she spoke to the crowd about her vision for a democratic Myanmar.
The Nobel Peace Prize winner said she favoured a non-violent transition based on negotiation and compromise.
SOUNDBITE: AUNG SAN SUU KYI, SAYING (English):
"Democracy has its own discipline and it must be an evolutionary process. The democracy that evolves in Burma has to be in line with the aspirations of our people."
Members of the audience said they found Suu Kyi's words optimistic and inspiring.
SOUNDBITE: CHO CHO HERNANDEZ, SAYING (English):
"When I went back to Burma, I passed by her house when she was under house arrest just to have a peek and there's a lot of police, barricades and stuff. So it's very different to see her in person today."
SOUNDBITE: AMY, SAYING (English):
"I think what she said was really encouraging and also she very realistic about the future, what is to be done. There is so much to be done, this is just the beginning."
Suu Kyi's U.S. visit included a meeting with President Barack Obama.
She also received the Congressional Gold Medal, recognising her fight for freedom and democracy.
