Pope Benedict's former butler is set to give evidence for the first time on the second day of his trial for stealing documents.
Paolo Gabriele, 46, has not spoken publicly since he was arrested in May for handing the papers to a journalist he hoped would expose corrupt dealings in the Vatican.
