Toxic Dye Found in Chinese Dried Chili

More toxic food in China. This time, it's a cancer-causing industrial dye that's been found in chili paste and red chili powder products, a trade watchdog has said.

Several supermarkets and factories in Hunan province are finding things heating up for them. They were caught making and selling dried chilies dyed with the chemical compound Rhodamine B. It's usually used as a red die in paper or leather. Sometimes it's applied to fluorescent dye.

Violators have been fined between $1,580-$9,500, according to the Chinese language media Want Daily.

The south central Chinese province is known for its dry-hot cuisine—many dishes require dried chilies.
