Chongqing Police Chief Wang Lijun Gets 15 Years Behind Bars

On Monday the Chengdu Intermediate People's Court handed former Chongqing police chief Wang Lijun a sentence of 15 years in jail. It came after a hearing last week where Wang pleaded guilty to the charges of "bending the law for selfish ends, defection, abuse of power and bribe-taking", according to state-run CCTV.

The sentence was handed down after the court found him guilty on four charges, including a cover-up of the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood by Gu Kailai, the wife of disgraced former Party chief Bo Xilai.

According to the official account of Wang's trial, he helped Gu evade suspicion of poisoning Heywood, but kept the evidence of the murder.

Two months later, Wang confronted Bo with the allegation that his wife was suspected of killing Heywood, but Wang was "angrily rebuked and had his ears boxed."

Days later, Wang was fired from his job as Chongqing police chief by Bo, and fearing for his life he sought refuge in the US consulate in Chengdu, until Chinese officials persuaded him to leave with them.

Last month, Gu was sentenced to a suspended death sentence for Neil Heywood's murder.

Wang has indicated he regrets the crimes he has committed.

The regime has not indicated what will happen to sacked Chongqing Party boss Bo Xilai.
