Tear gas fired to disperse a crowd of students in the Pakistani capital Islamabad.
Hundreds from various colleges and educational institutions had gathered to demonstrate against a U.S. made film that insults the Prophet Muhammad.
Police were trying to stop the protesters from reaching the U.S embassy.
(SOUNDBITE) (Urdu) PROTESTING STUDENT, JAWAD AHMAD:
"Our policemen are not any better than the Americans. They should allow us to demolish the American embassy because they have blasphemed against our holy prophet."
Other demonstrations also took place elsewhere in the country.
In Lahore, the cultural capital, students from an Islamic school marched through the streets chanting against the U.S.
And In Muzaffarabad in Pakistani Kashmir, two hundred protesters set fire to an effigy of U.S. President Barack Obama, while students marched through the city holding banners and chanting Islamic slogans.
