Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport is looking to hire a herd of goats and sheep to graze on their overgrown field of grass.
The herder who provides the animals must also have an electric fence to keep them contained. The one hundred acre plot of land has attracted wildlife, especially birds, which Amy Malick, an Aviation Department official says “is not desirable at an airport.” They have chosen to test out maintaining the area using the grazing method because the plot of land is hard to access and would require expensive and heavy machinery. The three week initial program already has a few potential herds to choose from, and is advertising online to find more candidates.
An airport in Atlanta has also been testing out a grazing herd of goats and sheep to weed out invasive species of plants. Other companies have also utilized goats as lawn maintenance including Yahoo And Google.
A Vermont cemetery has also resorted to using goats and sheep for their cheap labor.
