Fighting breaks out near Syria's Turkish border, as rebels battle government troops for control of the crossing.

Sporadic gunfire was witnessed coming from Syria's Tel Abyad - a border crossing rumoured to be used for smuggling weapons.

Turkish officials said stray bullets flew across the border into Turkey hitting a number of houses.

At least one person was injured.

Amateur video, which could not be independently verified by Reuters, appeared to show rebel fighters gathering in the border town.

They hold at least two other crossings on the northern border.

Over 18 months, Syria's conflict has escalated into civil war.

As tens of thousands flee the violence, estimates suggest over 27,000 people have lost their lives.
