Robert van Zyl - Co-Founder
Robert has over seven years’ experience in the financial services industry. After obtaining a BCom Honours in management accounting from the University of Stellenbosch, he joined Cadiz Financial Strategists on their equity derivatives desk. He progressed from broking and executing trades to developing and structuring derivative products for the pension fund and institutional markets. He was listed as a Top 10 derivative research analyst by the annual Financial Mail research rankings. Rob then spent two years in South and North America obtaining a double Master of Business Administration degree from Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile and McCombs School of Business, University of Texas. On his return to South Africa he then joined US based Kingdom Zephyr Africa Management team managing their US$122 million private equity fund.
In 2005 Rob established and jointly managed Invescape Growth Partnership South Africa, the South African private equity and investment management arm of a Dubai based Investment House. His role included the initiation, negotiation, implementation and the ultimate management of a number of investments on behalf of the company. With the acquisition of the Dubai based business by a leading investment bank, the South African division was bought out and Opes Capital created.
Phillipe Lalieu - Co-Founder
Phillipe has more than 13 years of corporate finance and business development experience in both the corporate and entrepreneurial arenas. He obtained his BCom degree at Witwatersrand University in law, finance and accounting. Thereafter he spent several years at Anglo Platinum as a manager in the Corporate Finance and Business Development department - gaining extensive and invaluable corporate finance exposure through his liaison with leading local and international merchant banks, as well as the largest international mining houses.
