Clashes between protesters and police near the American embassy in Cairo continued into the early morning.

They are protesting against a film they say insulted the Prophet Mohammed.

Egyptian security forces fired tear gas as demonstrators threw stones.

The protests in Cairo started late on Tuesday when around 2000 protesters ripped down the US flag and burned it.

This follows violence in Benghazi on Tuesday which killed the U.S. ambassador and three staff members. The attacker were part of a mob blaming America for the film.

Protests over the film have spread to other muslim countries and could have an impact on the U.S. presidential race.
