Rain, Floods Hit Yunnan After Last Week's Earthquakes

2012-09-12 45

Thousands of people living in tents in Yunnan province since last week’s earthquakes were forced to evacuate today as torrential rain triggered floods and mudslides.

State media reported that on Tuesday Yunnan recorded their heaviest rainfall in history. An average of 5.9 inches fell in seven hours, flooding makeshift camps where people sought shelter.

A spokesman for the provincial fire department estimated at least 100 victims and rescuers are still trapped by the floodwaters in the heavy mountainous areas.

At least 81 people died in the 5.7 magnitude earthquakes. Five days after they hit the area people are still waiting for supplies.

Roads to the county are cut off, which is delaying any disaster relief to the area.

The water supply pipeline has also been damaged.

Torrential rain is expected to continue for another two days.
