China's leader-in-waiting has apparently disappeared. Xi Jinping hasn't been seen in over a week. He's cancelled meetings with visiting foreign dignitaries like US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and today, he stood up the Danish prime minister. China's foreign ministry has also declined to comment on his whereabouts.
Chinese state-run media has always been tight lipped about the personal lives of top ranking members of the Politburo, China's ruling elite. That leaves the rumor mill to dish out explanations, and there's been plenty about why Xi has been out of sight.
The rumors, many coming from overseas Chinese media, have ranged from Xi hurting his back swimming, being involved in a car accident, to sustaining an injury fleeing an assassination attempt by supporters of ousted Politburo member Bo Xilai.
