U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and his likely successor vice Premier Li Keqiang in Beijing today (September 5).
Clinton’s visit comes as the US eyes a strategic pivot in the Asia Pacific region.
The trip is set against an ongoing territorial dispute between the Chinese regime and its neighbors over islands in the South and East China Seas. Beijing has asked the US to keep out of those disputes. The US, on the other hand, is urging Chinese leaders to engage in multilateral talks to settle the claims.
China has also blocked UN measures aimed at resolving the bloodshed in Syria. US and other western powers want to impose sanctions on Bashir al-Assad’s regime to force him to end the violence.
Clinton’s trip has done little to resolve the differences.

Despite the divide, during a joint news conference earlier on Wednesday, Clinton and Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi stressed the need for steady ties. The remarks underscored efforts by both sides to contain quarrels, especially as they navigate political transitions at home.
After meeting with Wen Jiabao and his deputy, Clinton concluded her two-day visit, possibly her last as secretary of state.
