Store Named Hitler Stirs Controversy - as part of the news series by GeoBeats.
Shakespeare once wrote, “What’s in a name?”
The name, Adolf Hitler, brings forth thoughts of hate, cruelty and atrocity for many, but for a shop owner in India, the name is “catchy” and good for business.
Rajesh Shah, part owner of a men’s clothing store says the decision to name the business Hitler was made to honor his business partner’s grandfather. Prior to the current controversy, Shah claims he didn’t know who Adolf Hitler was, although the large signage on the building, including a swastika to dot the ‘I”, would indicate otherwise.
The small Jewish population in India is not satisfied and believes the owners are feigning ignorance as to what the name represents.
Members from the local synagogue approached Shah and asked that he change the name, but he stated “If the Jewish community really wants the name changed, they can pay for it. I have spent too much on branding for my shop.”
What are your thoughts? How should the situation be addressed?
