It's known for its kidnappings, drug trafficking and involvement in a conflict that's killed tens of thousands of people.
Now Colombia's main rebel group, the FARC, says it will end hostage taking as well as release 10 security force members.
But the country's president, Juan Manuel Santos, says those moves don't go far enough - and that the FARC had to free all captives if there were to be peace talks.
