And British police are taking no chances, sending out a full squadron to search for the ferocious feline.
But hunting for the "King of the Jungle" at night is no easy task, and these brave officers are yet to set sights on the big cat.
Residents were told to stay at home, but many opted instead for the local pub.
[Dave Sparks, Pub Landlord]:
"We've had karaoke here tonight and everyone carried on enjoying themselves. A couple of families with young children were a little bit worried but after a while, they've all been in here all day and they've had a good time."
A member of the public spotted the beast roaming in a field on Sunday night, and managed to snap a photo.
Experts from Colchester Zoo have analyzed the picture and believe the sighting to be genuine.
It is thought that the lion may have escaped from a traveling circus in the area.
