Typhoon Bolaven has begun battering the Japanese island of Okinawa.
With peak winds of up to 252 kilometres an hour, officials say it's one of the worst storms Japan has experienced in the past 50 years.
Residents have been told to stay indoors and all flights in and out of the island's airport have been cancelled.
