South Koreans stake their claim on a disputed island by playing a game of basketball.
The islands, called Dokdo in South Korea and Takeshima in Japan, lie equi-distant from the two mainlands. They are believed to contain frozen natural gas deposits potentially worth billions of dollars.
Tension between the North Asian countries, flared earlier this month after South Korean's President became the first South Korean leader to set foot on the islands claimed by both countries.
The Korean Basketball Association adopted a different approach
(SOUNDBITE) (Korean) LEE JONG-GUL, PRESIDENT OF KOREA BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION, SAYING:
"We are sportsmen, who are protesting in the most peaceful and dignified way. Basketball is a sport as well as a peaceful diplomat. Today, we played the basketball on Dokdo and clearly showed that this is our territory."
The tournament was the second basketball tournament held on the island by South Korea. The previous one was held in August last year.
