Aid groups are appealing for more funds, and to airlines for cargo space in their flights to get nutritious food to the those in famine in Somalia.

With children are bearing the brunt of the crisis in Somalia, half a million children are on the brink of starvation.

At least two of the famine zones are under the control of al-Shabab, an opposition group regarded by US security agencies as linked to al-Qaeda.

The UN says that about two million people in these regions cannot be reached and there are claims that large numbers of them are being held against their will.

Al Jazeera spoke to Peter Smerdon, the UNICEF spokesperson in New York.
