Adam Yauch, a founding member of one of the world's most successful hip hop bands, the Beastie Boys, has died after a three-year battle with cancer.
The 47-year old's distinctive voice and rapping style made the band stand out from the rest in their genre, ushering in a rise to stardom in the mid-1980s.
The band has sold more than 40 million records and was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.
Al Jazeera's Tom Ackerman takes a look back at Yauch's life.
