The dangerous annual practice known as Gotmar Mela in India usually leaves the participants injured.
This year was no exception. More than 320 people were hurt during the event, leaving 7 in critical condition.
Gotmar Mela is essentially a stone war - rocks and pebbles are thrown at opposing sides. Local residents have been partaking in the event for more than 300 years.
According to the Times of India, people from neighboring villages "gather on either side of the river banks and try to pull a flag on a tree top but are prevented by people throwing stones from either side.” Based on popular belief, the ritual originated after a king abducted the daughter of a neighboring king and both sides threw stones at each other as a result of the conflict.
The scary event was once banned due to the extreme injuries. However, locals still participate and this year’s victims were taken to hospitals and health centers for recovery treatment.
