Fisherman Reels In $50,000 Catch - as part of the news series by GeoBeats.
Catching fish is a relaxing hobby for most people. So imagine the surprise when a lucky fisherman reels in a catch worth thousands of dollars.
Alaska hosts the annual Seward Silver Salmon Derby and the winning cash money usually goes to visiting fishermen. However, this year, 64-year-old, Michael Rogers, who is a life-long resident of Seward caught the winning, tagged fish.
Rogers states “I had to sit in the derby office for a while and fill out paperwork, and finally they handed me an envelope. So then I opened that one up and it says $50,000. It was quite a shock.”
The catch marks the second time in the 55-plus year history of the derby that a $50,000 fish was caught.
Another Seward resident found himself a winner at this year’s Derby. 69-year-old, Earl Cagle caught a 16.14-pound silver salmon and took home $10,000 as the prize. Last time someone won from Seward was in 1980.
