Myanmar opposition prepares for elections

Opposition party National League for Democracy has not lost its energy in the campaign trail leading up to Myanmar's third election in half a century.

The area of Kawhmu south of Yangon, was not famous for much, until opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi decided to run for parliament by standing in this seat.

Now, a community that had its political voice silenced for so long by the army, is embracing the process of democracy.

Suu Kyi chose this constituency because it is a poor, rural part of the country. It is also part of the Irrawady Delta region which was hit hard by cyclone Nargis in 2008, a disaster that was largely ignored by the military government.

Al Jazeera's Wayne Hay reports from Kawhmu, Myanmar.
