STORY: At least 20 people were injured early on Tuesday when a rogue firework accidentally set off thousands of others in the bell tower of a church in the Spanish eastern town of Elche, said Spanish agency Europa Press.

The explosion caused a rain of sparks and burning material that fell on people gathered for the town's annual summer festivities.

Spanish media reported that the church fireworks were covered by a protective blanket and in a pack designed to shoot mini-rockets into the air before exploding.

According to a statement by Elche's city hall made available on Twitter, one firework fired from elsewhere landed on the pack and made it explode.

The "Night of Down", also known as the "Night of the Fire" festivities have their origin in the Middle Ages in which Catholic families offered a fire rocket to Virgin Marie for each children in the house. The festival is held annually in Elche on August 13.
