Flood misery after China typhoon

STORY: Typhoon Haikui made landfall in China after weakening to a tropical storm on Wednesday (August 8), bringing heavy rains till Saturday which claimed at least 17 lives and forced over two million to leave their homes.

Wooden planks and boats have replaced cars as the default mode of transportation in Jingdezhen city (pron: Jing-der-jen) in the south-eastern inland Jiangxi province, state media reported.

State television showed vendors scrambling to save their wares from the flood waters which reached waist-height in some places.

Rescuers helped more than 1,800 residents to evacuate their flooded homes as of 1800 local time (1000 GMT) on Saturday, state television reported.
