Congolese displaced at risk of cholera

A cholera epidemic is putting thousands of lives at risk here in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Ten people have died in the past week as the disease spreads through camps for the displaced.

Many have fled the conflict between rebels and government forces and are now living in unsanitary conditions.

(SOUNDBITE) (Kiswahili) DISPLACED WOMAN, JOSEPHINE ZICAMBE, SAYING:

"Our children are getting sick on a daily basis, they are passing loose stools, they don't eat healthy food and there is no water."

The country lacks healthcare infrastructure, and international humanitarian group Doctors without Borders is trying to help with the epidemic.

SOUNDBITE) (French) MEDECINS SANS FRONTIERES, DOCTOR CHRISTIAN MASUDI SAYING:

"Its important to note that cholera is a disease that comes from dirty hands so the preventive measures are the measures that are linked to hygiene. Access to drinkable water is imperative as well as many latrines."

Last year alone, the waterborne disease here killed more than 230 people.
