Half of Americans Drink Soda Every Day - as part of the news series by GeoBeats.

About half of Americans who participated in a study done as part of Gallup’s annual Consumption Habits poll claimed that they drink at least one glass of soda per day. Even though soda drinks have no nutritional value and are choc full of sugar and sodium, the same number of non-soda drinkers, about 4 out of 10, said that they are overweight compared to the same number of people who drink soda daily. The poll didn’t ask what kinds of soda people drink, and consumption of diet soda may contribute to the unexpected results. The average amount of soda consumed by Americans who drink it is about 2.6 glasses per day.

The study also focused on coffee consumption among Americans, which has remained steady since 1999, with over 60 percent of people saying that they drink at least one cup of coffee every day. The amount of coffee consumed went down slightly from 2.9 cups in 1999 to 2.5 cups in 2012, but this may be attributed to the size of coffee cups or the strength of the brew. The study took place over the phone from July 9th to the 12th and involved a sample of one thousand American adults.
