The increase comes amid reports rebels are in control of one of the city's districts.
Aleppo, a city of 2.5 million people in the northern part of the country, as well as Damascus, now find themselves at the frontline for the country's insurgency. Both are seen as crucial tests for President' Bashar al Assad's ability to retain control in the face of the 16 month insurgency.
