Torrential rains lashed Xishuangbanna prefecture in southwest China's Yunnan province, an area inhabited by the ethnic Dai minority group, in recent days, triggering floods and mudslides, state media reported on Friday (July 28).

The only bridge linking Abutuo and Zhalahe village in Mengla county to the outside was destroyed by flood water, leaving local villagers with no other options but to wade across the river, according to state television CCTV.

Electricity was also cut off in the villages, CCTV said, adding local authorities have promised to repair the bridge after the rain stops.

Downpours that started to hit the province in early Wednesday (July 25), also triggered mudslides in many towns in the prefecture, blocking roads, and stranding nearly 2,000 people, CCTV reported.

Food, water and daily necessities were needed in those areas, said CCTV.
