More than eight million Egyptians turned out to cast ballots in the country's first post-revolution election, according to the High Elections Commission, which released first-round results on Friday night.
The commission released only results for individual seats, which in Egypt's complex electoral system will account for just one-third of the People's Assembly.
The other two-thirds of the assembly will be selected from candidates running on party lists, and those results will not be officially released until the end of the election's three stages, in January.
Initial results showed that most individual races were heading to run-off elections, and that no women would be competing. The Islamist Freedom and Justice Party, the Muslim Brotherhood's political wing, and the Nour Party, a hardline Salafi group, were leading results.
