In Nepal, the Hindu caste system is a rigid hierarchy that gives social status based on people's lineage and work.

But Ram Chandra Malik, a street sweeper who is one of the the Dalits, or "untouchables", the lowest class, is struggling to break the deep prejudices and stigmas his community faces.

Against the odds, Malik is challenging the system politically and was even a candidate in the last parliamentary elections.

In a special three-part series called "Breaking The Bonds", Al Jazeera takes a look at people challenging stereotypes, to create a better future for themselves.

Al Jazeera's Subina Shrestha reports from Siraha district, Nepal.
