Holding the Iranian government accountable for attacks on the British embassy and another diplomatic compound in the Islamic Republic's capital, Iranian diplomats were given 48 hours to shutter their embassy and leave the UK.
Some Iranians, angry at the British government, welcomed the diplomats upon their return to Tehran. The cheers and chants that greeted the diplomats in the capital come at a time when diplomatic ties between the Islamic Republic and the west are at an all-time low.
