After devastating rainfall, Beijing officials are asking the public for donations. By contrast, the public seems to be less in the mood for government fundraising.
Across micro-blog boards, there's a feeling of mistrust. Many accuse officials of wanting to pocket the money.
One victim in Shidu County wrote, "We received some emergency food, like bananas, eggplants, and potatoes, and that's all...before we common people get anything, all the money has already taken by government officials."
Another blogger going by the name "Victim Maomao" said, "I'll definitely give not even a penny to the government!!!! If there really is need of money, I'll give it directly to the victims in person."
Some even called the donations nothing more than organized robbery.
Much of the blame for the severity of flooding is being leveled squarely at Beijing officials.
China's Internet users have accused officials of spending billions on high-profile projects, like the Bird's Nest stadium, but not on fundamental infrastructure projects, like updating ineffective Soviet-style drainage systems.
