Australia's coast guard has intercepted a record number of asylum seekers heading for its shores in the month of June.

The current Labour-led government seems to be at a crossroads, however, over how to deal with a problem that has become a emotive issue in the country.

Hundreds have died in recent months on their perilous journey for a better life.

Al Jazeera's Andrew Thomas reports from Sydney.
