The Olympic torch relay is an integral part of the modern Olympic games. The torch run for the London 2012 Summer Games was briefly interrupted when a teenager yelling “Allahu Akbar,” which means God is great, tried to steal the torch away from 23 year old Anna Skora, as she was running with it through the English town of Gravesend.
A spokesperson for the local police department issued a statement saying “At around 9.55am a man apparently attempted to take the Olympic torch from a torchbearer. Security officers intervened and no one was hurt.
The torch is scheduled to make an 8 thousand mile journey on its relay tour of Britain, which also includes a leg that crosses through part of Ireland. The incident in Gravesend is not the only controversy surrounding the relay so far. A 27 year old man was arrested after running next to the torch bearer naked with “Free Tibet” written on his back. The man has been released on bail and videos of the incident have appeared online.
