STORY: Syrian state television broadcaster, Syria TV, on Sunday showed the country's president, Bashar al-Assad, apparently meeting with his new Army Chief of Staff, Ali Abdallah Aysoub.

Ayoub and Assad could be seen shaking hands, before sitting down and talking to one another in front of cameras.

The new army chief will take over from Fahad Jassim al-Freij, who was appointed to defense minister on Wednesday, who replaced Daoud Rajha who was killed in a bomb attack the same day, which also claimed the life of Assad's brother-in-law.

Freij, who was previously the chief of staff of the armed forces, is from the province of Hama, a center of unrest in the 16-month-old revolt against Assad.
