Amateur video footage purports to show a Syrian government tank in the village of Tremseh during a bloody attack on Thursday.

After deploying a fact-finding mission in the village, UN monitors say Syrian government forces used heavy weapons in its assault on the town.

"Our observers confirmed the use of direct and indirect weapons including artillery, mortar shells and small arms. And the count of 27 eye witnesses that we interviewed, the consistent account all indicated that the attack started at five o'clock in the morning by shelling and then ground forces went in"

Damascus has denied accusations that it used heavy weapons or helicopters, but has admitted using small arms and rocket-propelled grenades.

There are conflicting reports of mass killings during Thursday's attack on the town with activists estimating 100 to 220 people were killed and the government saying just 37 people died in the attack.

The International Red Cross says that the conflict in Syria can now be classified as a civil war.
