When employees feel their job security and livelihoods threatened by external circumstances that they perceive to be largely outside of their control, they often react in predictable ways. We describe the undesirable employee reactions as the Five Factors we as leaders must address. These factors are employee reactions resulting in:

1. A refocus on more basic security needs
2. A loss of a sense of personal effectiveness
3. A growing perception that the implied employment contract with management has been broken
4. Becoming less focused on quality and productivity; and
5. Becoming disillusioned with the business leadership.

These reactions put both the employees and the business at even greater risk during difficult or uncertain times. It doesn't have to be this way.
