Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple or Meenakshi Amman Temple is located south of river Vaigai in the temple city of Madurai, Tamil Nadu. It is dedicated to Goddess Parvati who is known here as Meenakshi and her consort Shiva named here as Sundareswarar (beautiful deity). Meenakshi is the principal deity of the temple, but not Sundareswarar - this is unlike most Shiva temples in South India where Shiva is the principal deity. It is believed that the Goddess Meenakshi grants all worldly wishes of her devotees. Especially, young people facing difficulty in getting married frequent the temple for fulfilling their desires.
