New York Officer Earned Over Quarter of a Million - as part of the news series by GeoBeats.

A Port Authority officer in New York has gone above and beyond the call of duty by putting in an average of 40 over time hours a week. At 43 years of age, Sergeant Edwin Riviera is a 16 year veteran of the force.

He is going to more than double his yearly salary by earning an extra 166 thousand dollars on top of his annual salary pay of over one hundred thousand dollars a year, making a grand total of over a quarter million dollars a year. Not too bad for a government employee.

A Port Authority official told the New York Post. “He’s on track to earn more than $280,000 in 2012.”

The Port Authority is in a difficult position where they are trying to limit over time hours, while also being drastically understaffed.

The New York Post reported that the Port Authority “agency is reluctant to promote officers to sergeant to address the situation because it believes it’s cheaper to just pay the overtime rather than higher base salaries.”
