Bus crashes off bridge in South Africa

At least 19 people are dead after a bus veered off a bridge and into a stream in South Africa on Monday (June 25).

Police said the driver may have lost control of the vehicle - traveling on a highway near the small town of Meyerton - south of Johannesburg.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) POLICE CAPTAIN SHADO MASHOBANE, SAYING:

"Police found that the bus lost control, of which we don't know how and what caused it. It drove over the safety rail of this bridge and into the stream."

The bus fell about 30 feet off the bridge before becoming submerged in water.

More than 50 passengers and a rescue worker were injured in the accident.
