With New Democracy on course to secure a parliamentary majority, party leader Antonis Samaras is calling the Greek election a victory for Europe.

"This is a victory for all Europe. I call upon all political parties that share those objectives to join forces and form a stable new government."
Two years of an acute financial crisis have taken their toll on Greece.

"I will make sure, that the sacrifices of the Greek people will bring the country back to prosperity. We will work together with our partners in Europe, in order to supplement the current policy mix with growth enhancement polices. We are determined to do what it takes and do it fast.
With the left wing SYRIZA party coming in a close second, observers say the results could lead to new protests against a coalition governing with significantly less than 50 percent of the electorate's support.
