Rebels in Sudan's Darfur region and troubled southern border states say they have formed an alliance to topple the government of President Omar al-Bashir, raising the prospect of more violence.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, Obaid Murawah, a spokesman for the Sudanese foreign ministry, said fighters in South Kordofan in the north Blue Nile area were part of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA).

He said when the SPLA aligned itself with South Sudan - the fighters were meant to leave the region when the two countries split.
