Competition for scarce resources, such as water and fertile lands, in Sudan's western region of Darfur has led to conflicts that killed more than 300,000 people, according to UN figures.
In some parts of Darfur, however, a mix of poverty and lack of development seems to be posing a greater challenge than raging conflicts.
